Understanding
Orthopedic & Spine
People often ask what is the difference between an orthopedic surgeon and a spine surgeon. Not all spine surgeons are orthopedic surgeons and not all orthopedic surgeons are spine surgeons. Some neurosurgeons perform procedures on the spine, but they have limited training with regard to the adjacent joints such as the shoulders, hips, and pelvis. For this reason, it is important to see an orthopedic spine surgeon when determining whether surgery is the right choice for you. Neurosurgeons have specialty training in the pathology of the brain. Dr. Apazidis frequently performs surgery with neurosurgeons and will help you determine if someone with that specialty is needed to properly care for you.
